A List of Towns Within The ShireLast modified: October 14, 2004 - 4:19 PM
Wollondilly Shire is comprised of 16 towns and villages, with a population of approximately 38,500 (May 2002). The largest town is Tahmoor with a population of approximately 4,664. The earliest known inhabitants of the district were the natives of the Gundangurra Tribe. Wollondilly is attributed to having three meanings, "A place where spirits dwell" or "Water trickling over rocks". The third meaning is connected to a legend about the burning black coal that was carried inside the skull of a bunyip, within a basket woven of waratah stems ("worron" means means black coal & "dilly" means carry basket). Picton is one of the earliest European settlements. A number of cattle strayed in the early days of the colony's settlement and were found in 1795 by a convict, near the Nepean River. The valuable herd, which had increased in number, were allowed to remain and breed in a sealed off area stretching from the Nepean to the Bargo River. This area became known as the Cowpastures and then Stonequarry until 1841. Each area is distinguished by its own varying histories and local characters, but all are a showcase of rural living, surrounded by natural bushland. A number of publications about the history of the district are available from the Picton and District Historical and Family History Society, the Wollondilly Heritage Centre and the Wollondilly Visitor Information Centre in Picton. Many of the historic buildings are privately owned and we ask that you respect the resident's privacy and avoid trespassing. A copy of tourist drives in the district is available from the Wollondilly Visitor Information Centre. To get more information on townships in Wollondilly Shire, please click on the links below.
