When do I need Council approval for a retaining wall to be constructed on my land?

In both residential and rural areas Council approval is not required if the wall is no greater than 600mm in height and stands a minimum of 400mm from the property boundary. In rural areas the wall should not interfere with wildlife corridors. In some circumstances for example the Bridgewater residential development, there may be specific requirements listed in Council Development Control Plans or private covenants over the land which could have specific requirements for certain developments. All retaining walls should be constructed so that they do not prevent the flow of natural stormwater.
