What is the Shire's Population?

The most recent Census taken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in August 2001 counted 38,856 people. The ABS preliminary Estimated Resident Population (ERP) for Wollondilly Shire at 30 June 2002 was 38,981.

Some snapshot information for the Wollondilly Shire of the 2001 Census:

  • The average occupancy rate (or household size) for the Shire is 2.9 people per dwelling or household (ABS 20001 Census) compared to 2.5 in Sydney.
  • 95% of dwellings are separate houses (compared to 63% in Sydney).
  • Of Wollondilly's 11,800 households, 84% comprised family households and 54% are composed of couples with children.
  • 88% of Wollondilly residents live in families, the average size of which was 3.3 people.

Population & Dwelling Statistics

The three adjoining towns of Picton, Tahmoor and Thirlmere (within 3 km of one another) have a population (at 2001 Census) of 3203, 4138 and 2752 respectively.

This is a combined population of 10,094. This equates to a population increase of 868 since the 1996 Census.
