Pet Animals

For many of us our dog or cat are considered to be part of our family. Unfortunately, there are all too many instances where pets go missing and cannot be found by their owners.

Registration and Microchipping

Registration and microchipping can be looked upon as a form of insurance for your dog. Should they be lost, any person who finds them will be able to contact Council, the dog identified and returned to its rightful owner.

As of 1 October 2002, all dogs must be microchipped and lifetime registered under the Companion Animals Act. When lifetime registering a dog, owners must provide proof of microchipping and proof of desexing (if applicable).

Council operates a Pound for animals lost throughout the Shire. It is open between the hours of 3:45pm-4:30pm Monday to Friday for viewing or claiming lost animals. Fees are charged for animals picked up and placed into the pound. If your animal has been impounded you will be required to make a payment to Council at the office before picking up the animal.

Off-Leash Areas

Council has four Off Leash Areas within the Shire in Appin , Bargo, Thirlmere and Warragamba. Signage is in place at all locations. Bins within those areas accept dog waste and officers do regular random patrols of these areas.
