Council to Increase Spending on Improved Stormwater Management

Last modified: June 29, 2009 - 12:31 AM

At the Ordinary Meeting of Council held on 15 June the Councillors voted to implement the Stormwater Management Charge as part of the 2009/10-2012/13 Management Plan.

Funding from the Stormwater Management Charge will be used for improved stormwater management in the residential areas of the Shire. This will include undertaking projects to minimise private property flooding and to improve the health of our local waterways.

“The Wollondilly area is blessed with many beautiful creeks and rivers. Without this additional funding Council would not have been capable of implementing these basic projects to improve their health,” said Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik.

“The Stormwater Charge is only applicable to those rated as Residential or Business,” said Cr Banasik.

“Each residential property will be charged $25, residential strata properties will be charged $12.50 and business premises will be charged between $25 to $325 (capped) depending on the land area. This levy will be charged annually on the rates notice, although pensioners are exempt,” said Cr Banasik.

“The projects funded by the Stormwater Management Charge will build on several grant funded projects which Council has been successful with; including the Urban Waterways Management Framework and Kennedy Creek rehabilitation works,” said Cr Banasik.

There are many things that you can do around your home, school or work to improve the health of our local waterways, including:

 Ensuring that only rain goes down the drain; anything else is a pollutant including soil, leaves, dog droppings and detergents.
 Pick up rubbish, no one likes rubbish in their street as it looks untidy and it is also a major concern due to the damage it can cause to the environment and native wildlife.
 Reporting pollution incidents to Council; sediment leaving a building site is pollution and should be reported to Council.
 Reporting illegal dumping to Council; the dumping of grass clippings and garden waste in Council reserves and along creeks is an offence and should be reported to Council.
 Controlling weeds and planting native species in your garden; many plants in your garden can actually escape into bushland and along creek lines and create a weed problem.
 Ensuring your onsite sewerage management system is working properly; systems should be serviced regularly, report faulty systems or illegal effluent discharge into the stormwater system to Council.

If you are eligible to be charged the Stormwater Management Charge it will appear on your rates notice as a separate item.

If you have any questions about the Stormwater Management Charge or stormwater management in general please contact Council’s Stormwater Project Officer on 4677 1122.
