New Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Wollondilly

Last modified: September 24, 2009 - 3:32 PM

On 21 September at the Ordinary Meeting of Council, Cr Col Mitchell was voted as Mayor for the next 12 months and Cr Benn Banasik was voted in as his Deputy.

This is not the first time Cr Mitchell has been Wollondilly’s Mayor, he held the position from 24 September 2001 to 15 April 2004 and has been a Councillor since September 1999.

This is Cr Benn Banasik’s first time as the Deputy Mayor.  He was elected as a Councillor in September 2008.

At the meeting on Monday night, Cr Mitchell addressed the audience with the following speech.

“I commenced my Local Government career as a servant in 1958.  My career has spanned 40 years and 4 Councils.  At the time of my retirement from Wollondilly Shire Council I held the position of Director.

In 1999, I was elected to this Council and I have previously held the position of Mayor from 2001 to 2004.  I have a good rapport with the Local, Federal and State members and it will be my aim for Council to continue to have a good relationship with the Federal and State Governments for the benefit of Wollondilly Shire Council.

It is a privilege and I know this as a great honour to be again Mayor of Wollondilly Shire Council.

I look forward to the next 12 months in anticipation:-
 The new LEP.
 The Growth Management Strategy.
 The finalisation of PTT Residential Rezoning, P Tag Rezoning Proposal.
 Continued lobbying for sewerage for Bargo, Buxton and other unsewered residential areas in the Shire.
 Opening Warragamba Dam for Tourism.
 Lobbying to reopen Nepean and Avon Dams for Tourism.
 Opening of the New Rail Museum at Thirlmere.

Thank you to Cr Banasik for the past 12 months.
Once again thank you for the opportunity to be Mayor.”
