The Wollondilly Shire is located approximately 75 km southwest of Sydney, NSW. A variety of picturesque National Parks makes up the majority of the Shire land, with the pristine natural environment almost exclusively providing the drinking water for the Sydney region. Wollondilly is a large shire, spanning over 2,500 km², with a number of towns, most notably Picton, dispersed throughout.
The population of Wollondilly Shire is approximately 52,230, spread across a number of smaller towns. Between 2008 and 2018, the Wollondilly Shire has experienced an average population increase of around 2.1% annually. This population growth is expected to dramatically increase in the future, one of many reasons why Wollondilly is an area with major growth potential.
The Wollondilly Shire is set for considerable growth as the population of the Sydney Metropolitan region continues to expand at a rapid rate, with these growing needs being met by the new Wilton Junction development plan. The area is also one of the last agricultural hubs in the Sydney region.
Despite economic instability in a number of other regions, the Wollondilly Shire provides residents and businesses with a growing, yet stable, economy. Since 2001 the GRP of the local economy has been growing at an average annual rate of 2.1%, increasing dramatically in recent years with 7.6% reported in 2012 and 5.2% reported in 2017. The Wollondilly Shire unemployment rate of 2.6% is well below the State and National levels, and the Economic Development Office is hoping to facilitate an increase in the number of local jobs available to residents and reduce the number of people that have to leave the region to find work.

The Wollondilly Shire is currently part of the fastest growing region in the Sydney-Metropolitan area. By 2031 the South West Subregion is expected to grow by an additional 325,850 people. This provides the Wollondilly Shire with huge growth opportunities, particularly with plans for the development of Wilton Precinct.
The Wollondilly Shire offers businesses and future residents an alternate location, allowing people to move away from the busy city lifestyle. The land within the region has a number of agricultural land holdings that can be very attractive to food producers. Its location also offers tremendous tourism opportunities, with a number of natural and historical landmarks scattered throughout the Shire. With Sydney and Wollongong within an hour’s drive, the Wollondilly Shire is in the ideal position to take advantage of the growth opportunities that these areas provide.
