Commemorative Place Naming Proposal to Honour Mr Colin S. Miller AFSM
The commemorative naming for Mr Colin Miller was supported by Council on the Ordinary Council Meeting 29 April 2025 - Resolution 57/2025.
After the public exhibition period the proposal will be submitted to the NSW Geographical Names Board (GNB) for consideration at the next upcoming GNB Board Meeting.
The reserve (not formally named, known as Davies Place Reserve) is located at 2 Davies Place PICTON NSW 2571 – Lot 17 DP 1010479. The reserve is approximately 5 Hectares surrounding a residential estate and adjacent to Stonequarry Creek.
Mr Colin S. Miller AFSM a distinguished resident whose remarkable contribution to the Wollondilly community spanned more than eight decades. (13 July 1925 – 27 April 2025 – 99 years old).
Colin served Australia in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War before returning home to dedicate his life to the service of others. He was a founding member of the Tahmoor Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and devoted more than 70 years to the Rural Fire Service. Throughout his distinguished service, he held numerous leadership positions, including Captain, Group Captain, Voluntary Deputy Fire Control Officer and Senior Group Captain for the Wollondilly District.
His outstanding commitment was recognised through life membership of the Tahmoor Rural Fire Brigade, numerous long service awards—including the extraordinary 70-Year Long Service Medal—and the prestigious Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM), awarded in 1999 for distinguished service.
Beyond his fire service, Colin made an equally significant contribution to community life. He was a founding member of the Picton Rotary Club, a member of the Picton Masonic Lodge for more than 75 years, and remained a passionate advocate for preserving the history of local volunteer firefighting. In 2021, he published Wollondilly Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades, ensuring the stories and legacy of local brigades would be preserved for future generations.
Mr Colin Miller's lifelong dedication, leadership and unwavering commitment to public service have left an enduring legacy that has shaped the character, safety and spirit of Wollondilly. Few individuals have made such a sustained and lasting contribution to the Wollondilly community as Colin Miller. Through more than eight decades of military service, emergency service leadership, community volunteering, local business and historical preservation, his legacy has shaped the safety, heritage and identity of the Shire. His contribution is exceptional making him one of Wollondilly's most distinguished citizens."
It is fitting that Council seeks to honour his extraordinary legacy through the commemorative naming of this reserve, ensuring that future generations recognise and remember Colin’s exceptional service to Wollondilly.

Submissions
Submissions in respect to the proposed name must be in writing to, Wollondilly Shire Council at, PO Box 21, Picton NSW 2571 or email council@wollondilly.nsw.gov.au, clearly outlining reasons for such objection (quote reference CM8678). All objections must identify where or how the proposal does not conform to the Geographical Names Board (GNB) NSW Address Policy and User Manual (APUM) & Place Naming Policy, if they are to be considered and responded to by Local Government in the decision making.
Submissions for the proposal open 28th July 2026 and closing date of 5:00pm, 18 August 2026.
