On 27 November 2019 the Wollondilly Youth Advisory Committee hosted the first Youth Mental Health Summit for the Wollondilly.
What is it and why did we do it?
Early in 2019 the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) discussed options for Mental Health Month in October and ways in which we can support young people in the Shire. The YAC are always looking for ways to engage with local young people so that they can make sure they plan and provide events and activities that are relevant to them but also to inform and support them to gain access to the services that are available to them.
So the group developed the idea to hold a youth summit that would:
- Engage with local schools and young people
- Inform young people about the local services available to them
- Ask young people their thoughts about why young people might not engage with services
- Ask young people to develop some solutions for themselves and their communities
The summit was aimed at looking at a community need and trying to find a community solution to help support young people.

Who was involved?
In total we had over 20 young people from Picton High School, Wollondilly Anglican College and Camden High School at the summit.
The services involved in the summit were: PCYC Southern Highlands, ReFrame and Top Blokes. These services helped to facilitate the event to ensure there was plenty of support for young people.
A young person from headspace Campbelltown- Youth Reference Group was the facilitator for the event and we captured the discussions on the day through a live scribe. The finished drawing an be seen here.
We hope that by starting the discussion with young people from the local schools that they will continue the conversation with their friends and that they will lead the way in looking at solutions.
The Youth Advisory Committee have compiled this info graphic to showcase the discussions on the day and to use as a tool when talking to services to encourage them to provide supports in the area.
