Activate Wollondilly Building Preparedness and Resilience in Disaster Recovery

Posted on: 25.01.2017

Wollondilly Shire Council has received funding from The Office of Emergency Management to conduct four (4) Community Forums that will focus on disaster recovery and resilience to prepare Wollondilly Shire for future natural disasters that may occur.

The forums will target residents, businesses, community organisations/schools/charities and Emergency Service Agencies in February and March 2017 at the Picton Bowling Club to focus on disaster recovery, preparedness and resilience.

Activate Wollondilly will focus on key priority outcomes to:

  • support capabilities for disaster resilience,
  • communicate with and educate people about risks,
  • lead change and coordinate effort, and
  • partner with those who effect change to reinforce resilience and preparedness of the community.

The forums will be facilitated by retired former Police Commissioner Ken Moroney and State Recovery Coordinator Dave Owens leading the discussions.

Forum outcomes will be incorporated into the key strategies of the Community Strategic Plan and Wollondilly Disaster Recovery Plan. Priority actions will be developed for each target group that will contribute to an integrated approach in disaster management.

Activate Wollondilly will review how Council engages with the community and will establish a Community Reference Group. The reference group will contribute to the development of Council’s Community Strategic Plan and to the review of the Wollondilly Disaster Recovery Plan.

Luke Johnson, General Manager of Wollondilly Shire Council has said “I encourage residents, business people and other key stakeholders to attend the forums and provide their feedback and insight to help improve future disaster recovery efforts”

The forums will be held on the following dates and times:

  • Residents: Tuesday 7 Feb 6pm till 8pm
  • Business: Wednesday 15 Feb 6pm till 8pm
  • Community Organisations: Tuesday 21 Feb 11am till 1pm
  • Emergency Service Agencies: Wednesday 1 March 11am till 1pm
