Elders Storytime at Tahmoor Public School
Posted on: 15.03.2016
To recognise National Apology Day, Wollondilly Shire Council has been working with three local primary schools to arrange for local Aboriginal Elders to provide Story Time. This is thanks to funding provided through the Healing Foundation.
On 10 March, Aunties Karen Adams and Fran Bodkin went to Tahmoor Public School and told stories to children from year groups 1 to 4. Aunty Karen read from Aboriginal story time books which have been donated to the school library. Aunty Fran spoke of dreamtime stories from her heart and her own knowledge. The children and Elders enjoyed the interaction and sharing the experience.
This week Bargo and St Anthony’s Schools will be also have Elders Storytime. The selection of the schools was based on the high indigenous population of students and linkages to the local Aboriginal Community.
National Apology Day is a significant event on the Aboriginal Calendar and recognises the apology given by the former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2008 to the Stolen Generation and the broader Aboriginal Community.
