Future looks bright for Picton two years on from the 2016 Storm

Posted on: 06.06.2018

Looking down the main street of Picton today there is little evidence that this is the same town devastated by a storm just two years ago.

On 5 June 2016, a severe East Coast low weather system hit Picton which saw 128 residential properties and 144 businesses significantly damaged by an inundation of water. While the destruction left behind by the storm was enormous and local businesses faced the mammoth task of rebuilding their livelihoods; two years on the future is looking bright for businesses in Picton.

With 12 new businesses recently opening their doors and many more on the horizon; there is a new lease of life in the business community of Picton.

Mayor Judith Hannan said, “The new café culture has put Picton on the map! People are visiting us to see what the town has to offer and locals are reaping the rewards with many new and existing
wining and dining options.” “Things are looking up for businesses in Picton and the local
community and the town continues to go from strength to strength,” she said.

There are still three more buildings to be rebuilt in Picton and once these are complete, they will provide even more business opportunities in the future.
