Grants available to Young Carers in Wollondilly
Posted on: 03.02.2020
The Young Carers Grant aims to reduce barriers to education and increase social inclusion for young carers in Wollondilly between the ages of 12 and18.
One off grants of up to $1,000 are available to young people providing support and care to a parent or sibling living in Wollondilly for educational expenses, technology or social activities that help address the aims of the grant. Expenses can include (but are not limited to) individual educational tuition, iPads, laptops, gym membership, dance classes and text books.
Wollondilly Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “Young carers may help look after a person or people who have a disability, a mental health condition, an addiction problem, a chronic illness or is frail aged.”
“The grant aims to improve the educational opportunities and social inclusion of young carers who may be impacted by their caring responsibilities.”
Young carers may complete tasks such as personal care, cleaning, assisting with medications, or simply providing companionship.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) estimates that there are approximately 100,000 young carers aged under 25 living in NSW. Young carers can often experience reduced participation in education and employment, social and community participation and leisure activities due to their caring responsibilities.
Application open 10 February 2020 and close on 9 March 2020 with forms available on Council’s website.
