Council have successfully received two grants from NSW EPA for sustainability and waste projects in Wollondilly.

The first project received funding to run an integrated litter campaign in Warragamba. The project called “Warragamba is Our Home” will work closely with the Warragamba/ Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre, small businesses, Sydney Water and community volunteers to undertake clean up’s, an education campaign using the EPA’s Hey Tosser material and the promotion of information about how to report litterers. This project is being launched at Damfest, where Council staff will be giving away Hey Tosser merchandise, car tidy bags and asking people to make a commitment not to litter.

The project will also assist volunteers to measure litter amounts using the EPA methodology, the Local Litter Check. Being able to measure litter volumes will allow volunteers to see easily if their effort in litter control is making a difference.

The second grant is to collate and report existing illegal dumping data from Councils customer request system into an online web application called RID Online.

RID Online will allow Council to easily map locations for illegal dumping and to be able to identify hotspot areas in the Shire, based on data from the last two years. RID Online also allows Council to keep a central location for all their illegal dumping information and can generate a number of reports, such as, waste material dumped, tonnages and cost to Council to collect it.

The overall aim of the project is to use the information gathered in RID Online to review Councils Illegal Dumping Strategy and accompanying Action Plan. This action plan will provide specific actions for hotspot areas and will determine infrastructure needs at each location. It will also provide guidance for signage.

Funding for this project will cover the cost of collating and recording the data and the analysis of the information to review the strategy.
