National Volunteers Week
Posted on: 23.05.2016
Wollondilly Shire Council takes great pride in recognising the many efforts of its treasured volunteers. The Wollondilly Community Nursery in particular is taking the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the dedicated group of citizens that volunteer at the nursery. Known as WRAP (Wollondilly Regenerators and Propagators) our intrepid group have been fulfilling a vital role in the propagation and production of local native plants for people’s home gardens as well as supporting Landcare and Bushcare efforts in restoring natural bushland areas for over twenty years.
To celebrate National Volunteer’s Week, 11th-17th May, 2016 we would like to acknowledge Doreen Linsell for her dedicated efforts at the Nursery. Doreen has been a volunteer for over fifteen years and has had to overcome many health adversities to attend. Doreen grew up in Sydney and moved house many times before settling in Wollondilly, she has had several jobs but perhaps her most important role is as a loving mother & Grandmother. Doreen attends most Tuesdays and Thursdays and the amount of natives she has propagated is immeasurable as is our gratitude for her. Congratulations to you from Wollondilly Shire Council and all your friends at the nursery.
The Nursery is situated on Wonga Rd behind the Animal Shelter. Locally sourced native plants are grown with the tender loving care of our enthusiastic volunteers. Our native plants are as resilient as our community, and with a wide variety of species to choose from there is something to meet everybody’s needs.
Did you know residents from the Wollondilly Shire are able to obtain five free plants per quarter with proof of local residency?
The Nursery is also an environmental education and resource centre where you can find out information on a range of topics including how to control weeds, live more sustainably and how to propagate and grow native plants and their many uses. The facility is open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30am till 3pm. Our Nursery strives to create a friendly, appreciative environment and welcomes people from all over the Shire and beyond to come and participate and help build community connectivity.
