Picton Storm Event Update – 6 June 2016

Yesterday afternoon (5 June) at approximately 3pm Picton’s main street Argyle St was inundated as a result of a storm event. A number of businesses were damaged and Argyle Street & Menangle Street remain closed to the public. Water rose quickly and the SES performed 50 rescues and 17 evacuations during the peak of the storm event. Police have advised there was no loss of life or serious injury as a result of the storm event.
Council is working closely with the SES and other emergency services to assist those affected by the storm event, including assisting with the safe removal of debris.
Council is working with Endeavour energy to restore power to the area.
As a result of this event all Council buildings in Picton have been affected by a power outage and the following Council buildings in Picton are currently closed to the public:
- Council Administration Building
- Library Building ( Colden Street)
- Visitor information Centre
- Town Hall
- Children Services Cottage
The following council services will also be affected:
- Development services
- Customer Service
- Financial and Rating Services
- Community Services
- Health and Building Services
- Ranger Services
Council works crews are spread across various parts of the Wollondilly Shire working on the recovery , clean- up and repairs after the storm event.
Wollondilly Shire Council business continuity strategy has been activated. Council will advise the community via the Council website, Facebook and local media once council buildings and services are available.
The General Manager has requested that members of the public stay away from Picton town centre today as the situation is still too dangerous.
