Proposed Pedestrian Refuge on Camden Road, Douglas Park

Posted on: 27.03.2017

Wollondilly Shire Council has been successful in receiving a grant from Roads & Maritime Services (RMS) as part of the NSW Government’s ‘Pedestrian Infrastructure Safety Around Schools Program’. This funding is for the construction of a proposed pedestrian refuge on Camden Road, Douglas Park.

This is in response to the number of requests from the Douglas Park Community to provide a safe crossing near the Pre-School on Camden Road. This proposed refuge will address concerns regarding access to the local shops/businesses and will improve the safety of young school children getting to and from school as well as commuters accessing the train station.

Cr Judith Hannan, Mayor for Wollondilly said “The pedestrian refuge will provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians in Douglas Park and assist in reducing the speed of traffic on Camden Road. Thus providing a safer environment for school children, commuters and visitors to the local shops and businesses in Douglas Park.”

The proposed pedestrian refuge will result in a slight reduction in on-street parking directly next to the refuge and will include:

• A half-way stopping point for pedestrians

• New kerb extensions at the footpath

• Painted medians on approaches to the pedestrian refuge

Construction of the project is scheduled to commence during 2017/2018 financial year, subject to RMS approval of the design.
