Students visit Council for Local Government Week

Councils across NSW have been celebrating Local Government week from 29 July to 4 August with a range of activities focusing on the theme “Your Council.”

Wollondilly Shire Council hosted Year 5 and 6 students from local primary schools during the week to give them a glimpse into the many different roles that their Council has in the community.

Students took part in a mock Council meeting and debated resolutions such as “that homework should be abolished,” while some of them tried on the Mayoral Robes and chain.

They heard from staff about their local sporting facilities, environment and waste, road safety and library services; with a visit from some furry residents of the animal shelter proving especially popular.

Council staff also created a video and flyers to give school students an overview of Council’s role and activities. This will be sent out to the schools who weren’t able to attend the sessions in Picton.

Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “It was great to see the students engage with staff and ask questions about the many services we run.”

“We hope that this opportunity helps our young people understand the role of their Council and inspires them to engage in the political process as they get older,” he said.

As part of Local Government Week, Council held a colouring in competition for younger students and a written competition for older students on the topic “If I was Mayor for a Day.”
