Update on Proposed “Mega-Jail” in Wollondilly
Posted on: 17.05.2016
Mayor, Cr Simon Landow and Wollondilly Council General Manager, Luke Johnson spoke recently with The Chief of Staff of the Minister for Corrective Services, regarding the proposed “mega-jail” for Wollondilly.
Luke Johnson said “We have had an informative and positive discussion with the Minister’s Chief of Staff regarding Council’s concerns about recent media reports of a proposed prison in Wollondilly. We have been assured that while a number of sites are being considered, including some in Wollondilly, no decision regarding the preferred location has been made at this stage. There are no definite plans to build a prison in Wollondilly”.
“We were also advised that the suggestion of the prison being in Wollondilly did not come from the Minister.” said Mr Johnson.
Mayor, Cr Simon Landow said “We work closely with our community and always go to great efforts to consult with them about major proposals. So we were pleased to hear from the Chief of Staff that there will be community consultation before any decision is made”.
“It was an informative and positive discussion and we thank the Chief of Staff for providing some clarity. Arrangements have now been made for myself and the General Manager to meet with the Minister for Corrective Services”, said Cr Landow.
Council will continue to consult with the State Government about the proposal and continue to keep the community informed of any updates.
