Wilton Road at Broughton Pass, Wilton

Council wishes to advise that Broughton Pass (Wilton Road) has been closed indefinitely due to the retaining wall failure that occurred during the rainfall event on 5 June. The cause of the failure is not yet apparent and the solution for reconstruction is not yet known, but is likely to involve significant works.
The retaining wall, located on the western side of the bridge (Wilton side), was an approximately 6m high, dry stacked sandstone wall built around 70 years ago. The wall failed sometime Sunday afternoon taking a section of roadway with it. Without any retaining structure the rest of the road is unsecured.
Council has commenced investigation works with NSW Public Works and geotechnical specialists as well as advising the Roads and Maritime Service. Council will be seeking funding assistance through the Federal and State Government Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements to assist with the costs of repairs.
Director Infrastructure, Michael Malone said “The road will be closed until such time as the works are complete – as the extent of the works is significant, the closure period is likely to be lengthy. Council will update regularly on progress with repairs to the bridge and will continue to maintain Council’s services in Appin and Wilton despite the road closure.”
