Wollondilly ‘Branch Out’ Festival - a fresh approach for Youth Week 2018

Posted on: 29.03.2018

Young people in Wollondilly as well as the young at heart are invited to celebrate Youth Week at the inaugural ‘Branch Out’ Festival on 21 April at the Picton Botanic Gardens.

Mayor Judith Hannan said, “It is great to have an event especially for young people and organised by young people in the Wollondilly Shire.”

“Thanks especially to the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) for their hard work planning for the day.”

During their regular meetings, the YAC came up with the idea of having a local festival for Youth Week as they were tired of always having to travel outside of the area to see their favourite bands perform.

To help make the idea a reality, the NSW State Government provided funding towards the event, which has been matched by Wollondilly Shire Council.

Festivities will kick off from 10am with the ‘Splash of Colour Run.’ Participants can book for the run through TryBooking in one of the two age categories. There is a cost for the ‘Splash of Colour Run’ but all other activities on the day are free of charge.

The run will start at 10.15am for 8-12 year olds and 11am for the 12+ age group. There will be a number of fun colour stations located throughout the gardens and participants will run through a balloon arch to complete the race.

The festival will then continue from midday with performances from five great local bands including ‘Third Hour’ and ‘Twenty Two Strings.’ There will be a live art mural taking place at the toilet block for those who would like to make their creative mark.

With one of the aims of the event to raise awareness about wellbeing in the community, a range of material on health, wellbeing and local youth services will be on offer at the various information stalls. Food stalls will also be available.

A photography competition is being run as part of Youth Week for photographers aged between 12 and 25. The three categories are Australian Wildlife, Take Notice and Smile. The submission date for entries has been extended to Thursday 19 April with a $50 visa voucher awarded to the winner of each category.
