Wollondilly Celebration of International Day of People with a Disability - ROADBLOCK
Posted on: 13.12.2015
International Day of People with a Disability is a day sanctioned by the United Nations that aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and to encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.
This year Wollondilly Shire Council along with local professional artist Freya Jobbins have worked with children and adults with a disability from Disability Services Australia and Macarthur Disability Services to create a ROADBLOCK with the theme ‘The MAGIC of Inclusion’.
The concept of the ROADBLOCK was devised by artist Ross Barber and Wollondilly Shire Council is very proud to have supported the first ROADBLOCK in Australia along with Camden Council.
The inaugural ROADBLOCK installation occurred in the laneway between Council’s Administration Building and the Picton Shire Hall. By interrupting people’s normal activity of walking down the laneway the ROADBLOCK allowed people to reflect on the physical and social barriers, and challenges that people with a disability face on a daily basis.
Wollondilly Shire Council is committed to improving access and inclusion in the Shire through our Disability Access Advisory Committee and through our up and coming Disability Inclusion Plan.
