Wollondilly Council Extraordinary Meeting to discuss gaol proposal
Posted on: 01.12.2016
An Extraordinary meeting of Wollondilly Council is to be held on Monday 5th December at 7:30 pm to discuss a proposal for a major gaol facility potentially within the Shire.
The NSW Department of Justice (Corrective Services) have advised Council that they are investigating options for the location of a “Corrections Precinct” incorporating gaol facilities and ancillary services for around 5,000 prisoners. The Department is considering sites in two other unspecified local government areas but may be making a decision on the preferred location as early as March 2017.
Councillors and the General Manager received a briefing from the Commissioner of the Department on Monday 28th November. The information provided at the briefing did not include any detail of a potential site within Wollondilly.
At the briefing Councillors and the General Manager stressed that this was not consistent with Council’s strategic plans for Wollondilly and that there is a compelling need to engage with the community regarding such a significant proposal.
Mayor Judith Hannan said: “A gaol facility of this scale will change the character of our Shire and is not consistent with our vision for the future. We expect that the proposal will be met with very strong community opposition”
General Manager, Luke Johnson said: “Given that this is such a significant potential game-changer for the Shire, the Council will be holding an urgent Extraordinary Meeting on Monday night to discuss the matter and establish a proposed course of action”.
