A significant amount of business and residents, throughout Wollondilly, were severely effected by a storm event occurring on the 5th of June. Council is committed to providing the community with important information and support to those effected.


Thanks to the continued support of the Wollondilly Community, and from people across NSW, Wollondilly Shire Council is now opening Phase 3 of the Mayor’s Relief Fund. 

Phase 3 opens Monday 22 August and closes 4pm Friday 2 September. Individuals and families affected by the 5 June storm event can apply for financial support of up to $5,000 per residential address. 

Community Groups are also encouraged to apply for funds up to $5,000 under this round to enhance the provision of services and supports available to people affected by the storm event.

Those experiencing financial hardship as a result of the 5 June Storm Event may be eligible for financial assistance from the 2016 Storm Appeal through Phase 2 relief payments from the Mayor’s Relief Fund.

The Mayor’s Relief Fund 2016 Storm Appeal has raised $152,000 to date with almost $25,000 already allocated through immediate emergency payments to individuals and families directly affected by the storm event.

Assistance of up to a maximum of $5,000 as a one-off payment may be made to eligible applicants.

Application Period

Applications open Monday 25 July 2016 and close Friday 5 August 2016.

Additional funding rounds may occur following closure of the Storm Appeal on Friday 12 August 2016.

The Wollondilly Shire Council Mayor’s Relief Fund was established in January 2002 and subsequently endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as a deductible gift recipient.  The fund was established for the purpose of maintaining a public fund for the relief of persons in necessitous circumstances as a result of a disaster.  The fund is managed by a Committee comprising the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, General Manager and designated members of Council’s Executive and Management team.  The fund is required to be externally audited on an annual basis to ensure the appropriate management of the funds and compliance with Australian Taxation Office requirements.

The management of the fund is strictly controlled by the requirements of the adopted constitution of the Mayor’s Relief Fund (as endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office).  In the event of a disaster, such as the recent storm event, the Committee may initiate an Appeal and request donations be made to the Mayor’s Relief Fund.  All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

The Committee is responsible for approving and making payments to individuals who have suffered loss as a result of a disaster, or to approved social welfare organisations set up for the purpose of providing relief to those who have suffered loss or distress as a result of a disaster.  The Committee will decide on the most equitable method of apportioning the donated funds to those in need, and in urgent cases, the Committee is able to provide immediate relief where necessary.  Council has provided some initial funding to kick start the appeal and welcomes further donations from the public and other organisations to help provide important relief to those affected by the recent storm event.

The Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) is a short-term income support payment to assist individuals who can demonstrate that their income has been affected as a direct result of the disaster.
