Indigenous Strategic Reference Group

The Indigenous Strategic Reference Group is dedicated to guiding Wollondilly Shire Council’s approach to Indigenous culture and related matters. This group plays a role in providing advice on the development of policies, strategies, and initiatives that respect and promote Indigenous heritage. Key focus areas include the development of the Reconciliation Action Plan, raising awareness of Indigenous culture, advocating for the needs and challenges of Indigenous communities, and fostering respect and mutual understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents. The group also supports the planning and delivery of important cultural events, such as NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Week, ensuring that Indigenous voices are heard and respected in the community.

The key focus areas for the Indigenous Strategic Reference Group include:

• Matters falling within the following Councillor portfolios:
  • Indigenous
• Development and Implementation (as appropriate) of the Reconciliation Action Plan   
• Recognition and respect for Indigenous cultures and heritage 
• Raising the profile of Indigenous people within the Wollondilly Shire
• Providing constructive feedback into the development of a range of Council policy documents relating to Indigenous culture and heritage
• Representing the views and needs of the Indigenous community in Wollondilly in relation to Indigenous culture and heritage
• Establishing direct lines of communication to promote access, equity, participation and consultation between Indigenous people and Council
• Advising Council on appropriate consultation and referral processes with the broader Indigenous community
• Promoting mutual awareness and respect for the cultures of both the Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities
• Advocating to Council on the issues and challenges faced by Indigenous people
• Assisting in the planning, delivery and evaluation of key events including NAIDOC, Together Arts, Appin Massacre Memorial and Reconciliation Week.
