Green Bin
Waste Type: Garden Organics
Collection Schedule: Fortnightly
Size Options: 240L

- Dry and green leaves
- All types of weeds
- Flower cuttings
- Sticks and small branches (maximum 1m long and 15mm thick)
- Fruit or vegetable garden waste (still attached to vine or branch)
- Palm fronds (maximum 1m long and cut in half)
- Plant and shrub pruning's (maximum 1m long)
- Lawn clippings (make sure the bin isn't overly compacted to avoid not emptying properly during collection)

Waste Service Options & Pricing
Council provides different waste services depending on your property type. Most properties receive a standard three-bin service, with red bins collected weekly and yellow and green bins collected fortnightly on alternating weeks. Residential Properties
Residential properties are provided a three-bin service with red bins collected weekly and yellow and green bins collected fortnightly on alternating weeks.

Rural Properties
The standard three-bin service is now available to all residential properties including rural properties. Some existing rural properties have opted out of a green bin until the introduction of FOGO and these properties will continue with a two-bin service, with red bins collected weekly and yellow bins collected fortnightly.

Commercial / Business Properties
Commercial properties receive red bins collected weekly and yellow bins collected fortnightly. If required, a green bin can be supplied as an additional bin. Council Clean-Up services are not currently available to commercial properties. Commercial properties may need to engage a commercial waste service provider.

Collection requirements
- Check there isn't anything blocking your bins so the truck can easily access them
- Ensure cars aren't parked in the turning areas of a cul-de-sac or road on bin collection days
- Always place your bins out the night before your collection day
- Collection times can vary slightly due to changes in bin truck schedules, public holidays and severe weather
- If your bin collection is missed, report it to Council within 2 working days of your bin day. It will be collected by the end of the next working day (Monday–Friday)
Waste Service REquirements & Collection
Waste Service Requirements & Exemptions
If your home, domestic property, or retirement village is on a street where Council provides waste collection, you normally have to pay the Domestic Waste Management Charge however there are some exceptions.
For rural and residential areas, you may not have to pay the charge if Council cannot provide the waste service because of the property’s location or layout, and Council approves another waste service instead.
You may also be exempt if, as at 1 July 2013, your property was already using a separate non-Council waste service instead of Council’s service.
For commercial and industrial areas, you may not have to pay the charge if your dwelling or domestic property was not receiving Council’s waste service on 1 July 2005 because it was already using a separate non-Council waste service.
When will green bins be collected weekly?
When FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) is introduced in the future, the green bin will be collected weekly to accommodate food waste.
Why are our yellow bins collected fortnightly?
While some members of the community would like their yellow recycling bins collected weekly, this would come at a significant cost to all ratepayers. Very few councils provide a weekly service for all three bins, with most providing a very similar service as Wollondilly.
When we were developing our Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy, we heard that some residents supported weekly yellow bin collections, though most did not - mainly because many households do not generate enough waste to need weekly collections and the cost of providing this extra service would impact all ratepayers.
Based on community feedback, Council chose to:
- Retain fortnightly yellow bin recycling collections during the year
- Continue weekly yellow bin recycling collections during the festive season period
- Allow households that need more recycling capacity to opt for a larger recycling bin or request additional bins for a small fee, while keeping the overall cost down for everyone else
This approach was considered the best balance of maintaining appropriate service levels, affordability and fairness, while recognising that households across Wollondilly have different waste and recycling needs.
