Over the next 20 years, New South Wales is expected to generate nearly 37 million tonnes of waste, with Sydney’s landfills forecast to reach capacity by 2036. Locally, Council faces pressures from population growth, limited waste infrastructure, legacy landfill costs, and the impact of more frequent extreme weather on services.
To respond, Council is establishing a future-focused foundation for waste management that supports services, meets legislation, plans for growth, and ensures financial sustainability. The Waste Management & Resource Recovery Strategy 2025-2030 outlines actions to strengthen progress and address emerging challenges over the next five years.
Council has Environment Protection Licences issued by the NSW EPA for the following landfills:
These licences include conditions that require Council to complete quarterly and annual sampling.
The Protection of the Environment Operations Act requires Licensees to publish monitoring data that has been collected after 31 March 2012 as a result of Licence conditions. Monitoring data from sampling undertaken after the 31 March 2012 is available below in accordance with these changes.
The Bargo WMC Pollution Incident Response Management Plan (PIRMP) procedures to notify and provide information to people within the vicinity and relevant authorities in the event of an incident can be found under the "Sampling Points, Licenses & Certificates" tab below.
