Mobile food vans have become increasingly popular in recent years, popping up at festivals, community events, and weekend sports across the region. While they add colour and convenience to our towns, vending from local roads can come with a few challenges.
In residential areas, food vans can bring extra traffic and noise, which may impact nearby residents—especially during evenings or busy weekends. In commercial zones, they might compete with nearby businesses offering similar products.
But above all, safety is the most important consideration when it comes to roadside vending. To be suitable, vending locations need to meet Transport for NSW safety standards.
Transport for NSW Safety Standards include having a properly designed and constructed rest area with safe access and exit points for drivers. Currently, the only safe and approved locations for roadside vending in Wollondilly are on:
Hume Motorway (M31)
Picton Road (B88)
These are state-managed roads under the authority of Transport for NSW. At this time, there are no suitable locations for roadside vending on local roads managed by Council.
If you’re interested in operating on the M31 or B88:
You’ll need a letter of concurrence from Transport for NSW – contact them via freight@transport.nsw.gov.au
Once you have this approval, you can then apply for a Roadside Vending Permit with Council by completing our application form
Looking ahead, Council is working to secure funding through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program to upgrade heavy vehicle rest areas on Council-managed roads. If successful, this could create opportunities for roadside vending on local roads in the future.
Wollondilly Shire Council acknowledges the Dharawal and Gundungurra peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land, honouring their enduring cultural and spiritual connection to Country and recognising their ongoing contribution to the Shire.
