Update: 3 March 2023
Council is happy to announce that a contractor will be commencing repair works in mid-March. This is great news following the larger than normal effort to reinvestigate and design due to multiple reactivations. There will be considerable earth stabilisation and road works undertaken to see the road re-opened.
Wollondilly Shire experienced record rainfall throughout March and April of 2022 during what had already been a wet summer. The heavy rainfall triggered geotechnical instability across the shire which caused significant damage to Council road infrastructure through landslips and rock falls.
Council is in the process of repairing road damage sites through assistance of NSW Disaster Assistance funding.
Big Hill Road had suffered a landslide during the heavy rains of 2021. Site investigations and a detailed design for a retaining structure had been completed. Council was in the process of seeking Disaster Relief funding when the 2022 rain events occurred.
The site suffered reactivation during the 2022 rain events. The retaining structure design has been amended and the procurement of a construction contractor has been complete.
The road will be closed until the retaining structure has been completed. Please allowed additional travel time as an alternate route is required.
