Wollondilly Council has elected Cr Matthew Deeth as its new Mayor and Cr Matt Gould as Deputy Mayor at an Extraordinary Meeting on Monday night.
The new Mayor asked for the backing of his fellow Councillors to continue to deliver what they had started and to give a voice to the community.
“We have some significant challenges ahead of us - the community is looking to us for leadership,” he said.
“It is not about creating a new vision or a new direction but continuing and committing to the steps we’ve already taken.”
Cr Blair Briggs also nominated for the role of Mayor but lost the vote 5-2 to Cr Deeth in an open ballot, with Cr Landow and Cr Smith both apologies on the night.
Cr Gould was elected unopposed to the role of Deputy Mayor and thanked the Councillors for their support. Both the Mayor and Deputy will serve for the 21 months remaining of the current two year term.
The vote by the Councillors marked a historic occasion for Wollondilly, as Council will have a popularly elected Mayor for a four year term at the next Local Government election.
Former Mayor, Cr Judith Hannan stepped down from the role at last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting to focus on running as an Independent in next year’s State election.
Cr Hannan said, “Over the past two and a half years it has been my privilege to serve as Mayor of Wollondilly Council, during which time a huge amount has been achieved.”
“I will continue to serve as a Councillor and I remain wholeheartedly committed to the people of Wollondilly.”
